As a girl growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, shows like the Bionic Woman and Wonder Woman were some of my favorites. Yes, I even had the Jamie Summers doll with the skin that rolled up on her arm to expose her bionic components. I would spend an entire afternoon crafting Wonder Woman tiaras and wristbands from cardboard scraps. These women were powerful, independent and admired…and I wanted to be like them!
During these shows another icon appeared in commercials, The Enjoli Woman. Here was a woman dressed in great clothes with beautiful hair that was working, taking care of her kids, and doing something that must be fun with her husband! Maybe they are going to play an exciting game of Sorry…I mean how does a 10 year old interpret the glance she shoots the camera at the sound of his voice?!?!?
“Wow,” I thought. “I want to be her when I grow up.”
I realized the Bionic Woman and Wonder Woman were just cool fantasies. But The Enojoli Woman was real, I COULD actually be her. And who wouldn’t want that, she was freaking awesome!
As they say, “Be careful what you wish for.”
Many of us from that era grew up being told that we could indeed have it all. Our mothers didn’t have the opportunities we did. They were still relegated to the roles of either being a secretary, teacher, nurse or full-time mom. They saw things for us had only been dreams for them. So they encouraged us to grab the brass ring and get it all.
They meant well, but they had no idea the toll it would take.
We are now a generation of women that are highly stressed, filled with anxiety, and suffering from low self-esteem. We take pills to sleep, pills to relax, and more pills to just try and survive each day. It’s safe to say the Enjoli Woman Myth has been busted.
It is time for us to stop living in this world of fear we have created for ourselves.
Fear we aren’t good enough moms,
Fear we aren’t good enough wives,
Fear we aren’t good enough employees,
Fear our house isn’t clean enough,
our kids aren’t smart enough,
and our bodies certainly aren’t sexy enough.
Enough is enough, stop!
